Club Expectations of Players and Supporters

Ambassadorship

It is a privilege to represent our club and our community regionally and provincially. Players and spectators are expected to conduct themselves as positive ambassadors of our community.

Respect
WVC athletes are expected to conduct themselves in a positive and respectful manner at all times. This includes (but is not limited to) respect of themselves, WVC club personnel, fellow participants/supporters, officials, and the properties that we utilize. There is zero tolerance for the use of alcohol, tobacco, vapes, drugs or illegal conduct while representing our Club.

Our coaches are volunteers who are giving of their own time to improve the skills of these athletes and share their love of the sport. Please be respectful of their decisions, and their time.

Sportsmanship
Volleyball is a competitive sport. We keep score and there will be winners and losers according to the scoreboard. Regardless of the outcome, WVC expects all players to respect the decisions of the coaches, the officials, other participants, and the spirit of sport. Having setbacks helps build resiliency and teaches young athletes how to handling pressure and regulate their emotions.

We win or we learn… and on our very best days, we do both.

Participation
All participants have to role to play on the team. Practice is an essential part of team performance. Players are expected to be attentive and be actively engaged in learning at practice. They are also expected to participate in volunteer tasks as assigned, including doing lines, scorekeeping, set up and clean up of the playing spaces.

Work Ethic
All players are expected to show up prepared to train. Practice time is limited and coaches have lots to share. Players are expected to work hard, accept all feedback as an opportunity to learn, bring a positive attitude, and help their teammates succeed.

Have fun
Club Volleyball is meant to fun. All the coaches and players are there because they share the love of volleyball.

Should there be unresolved or repetitive issues, the player will be removed from the roster in consultation with the coaches and the parent/guardian.

Playing Time

Playing time is often a topic at the forefront in youth sports. Both athletes and supporters are keenly aware of playing time and often see it as a reflection of an individual's ability or success. Playing time is determined by many factors, including regulations designed to provide the opportunity for all athletes to compete.

At Wetaskiwin Volleyball Club, our coaches have sole discretion over playing time. The coaches know their players and know what their team as a whole needs to be a successful developmental volleyball club.

  • Playing time is zero-sum:  having one player on the court means another player has to be on the bench. When one player gets more court time means another player gets less. With every playing time decision, there is a likelihood that someone (or their parents) will be disappointed.

  • While equal playing time is not a goal, coaches are encouraged to give all eligible players the opportunity to compete. Coaches take a season-long view about each player’s time.

  • Playing time is not decided by ability only. As a youth development program, we strive to create an environment where both skilled and unskilled players are motivated to work hard, demonstrate effort, and improve their fundamental skills. Youths learn and grow at different rates so each player has different strengths that they bring to their teams.

  • Playing time is determined by a number of factors including attitude, communication, team dynamics, ability to manage emotions, positivity, attendance/participation at practices, focus, importance of game, and opponent's strengths/weaknesses. Playing time is earned by hard work, coachability, adaptability, performance, and effort to implement things learned in practice.

  • Strong teams have strong benches. Demonstrating a positive attitude on the bench and a willingness to be a supportive team member at all times is expected. Players who keep focused on the match while not on the court are better prepared to enter the match. Bench players play an important role in motivating their teammates, providing insight into team play, spot opponents strength/weakness, and have the ability to influence the outcome of the game.
  • Respectful conversation between players, coaches and supporters is encouraged. Please talk with your athlete before approaching the Coaches as your player likely knows more information that the supporter about playing time. Mid-game or mid-tournament is not the best time to approach the coach with concerns.   Please see Communications page for more information.

As per Volleyball Alberta Regulations, Developmental Substitution rules will apply for all U13, U14 & U15 teams.

  • All players listed on the score sheet must start the first or second set.

  • In the first two sets, no substitutions may take place before one team has scored 15 points. An athlete may be substituted out of a set due to injury.

  • If a third set is necessary, any line up can be used.
